Copyright Trolls

green trollJust came across this site dedicated to fighting copyright trolls – typically law firms that use the threat of litigation to extort settlements out of alleged infringers (usually related to pornography). I don’t think this is what the Framers had in mind when they wrote:

“To promote the Progress of Science and useful Arts, by securing for limited Times to Authors and Inventors the exclusive Right to their respective Writings and Discoveries”

In any event, welcome to the seedy side of copyright.

  1. Thanks for noticing and spreading the word (which is one of my main goals: to raise awareness of the judicial plague called copyright trolling). Other similar blogs to check are run by DieTrollDies (a layman like me) and you neighbor from Houston attorney Rob Cashman .

    We are not anti-copyright or pro-piracy sites as our enemies try to portray us (no wonder there are many who would be happy to shut us down), but rather anti-shakedown-business-model sites. We are emotionally biased at times but trying to be factually correct in exposing trolls’ predatory tactics.



  2. Thanks SJD – I was intrigued by the one judge who hinted that copyright might not protect pornography – I wonder if his basis is that it has no creative or artistic merit? You know the Bridgeman case from a few years ago emphasized the point that a photograph of an object which simply depicts the object may not be subject to copyright protection – will be interesting to see how this plays out.
